Dog Breed Series: All About your Labrador Retriever Part 3

It’s Dr. Liao here to bring you our third installment of our Wellnergy Pets Breed Wellness Mini-Series!

To review, I created our Breed Wellness Mini-Series to highlight how to best care for certain pet breeds and ailments that they may be prone to developing. In our first installment, we talked about our Labrador Retrievers, and their predisposition for hip dysplasia and developing arthritis. And in our second installment we talked about their potential to develop allergies and skin conditions.

Today’s Tip #3: Ear Infections

Often going hand in hand with allergies is the propensity for Labrador Retrievers to develop Ear infections. Oftentimes these ear infections can be caused by self trauma when Labrador Retrievers are itching nonstop around the face, and traumatize their ear canals. Ear infections can also occur when water gets into the canal during baths or swimming etc… The reason why Labrador Retrievers often deal with ear infections is in their anatomy. The large exterior part of their ear blocks the circulation of air, and traps moisture within the ear canal, creating an environment which easily leads to ear infections.

Ear infections can contribute to:

  • Pain
  • Itchy, Irritated Smelly Ears
  • Hearing Loss
  • Bleeding and Pus within the Ear Canal
  • Need for Surgical Correction

It is important to detect our ear infections early, and treat as soon as possible so they do not contribute to some of the severe scenarios listed above. Long term management and cleaning of the ears for pets that are more prone to ear infections is important as a preventive measure, so that your pet doesn’t have to deal with the pain and inflammation of an ear infection. My personal regimen for Labrador Retrievers and other pets that are prone to ear infections is:

1) Twice a month ear cleaning with an effective ear cleaner containing drying agent, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties.

2) Daily Skin Supplements to decrease itch and inflammation around the face and ears. Especially for pets prone to allergies.

When it comes to choosing a supplement to help care for your pet with allergies at home, I personally recommend our Skin & Coat Support supplement here at Wellnergy pets. Skin & Coat Support is rich in Omega 3, 6, and 9 Fatty Acids, Wild Alaskan Salmon oil, DHA, and EPA, powerful ingredients to help relieve itch and inflammation. It also provides vital antioxidant and nourishment support to your pet’s skin & coat and is essential to keeping your pet’s skin healthy, coat shiny, and itch at bay.

I hope this installment of our Breed Wellness Mini-Series here at Wellnergy Pets helps you to better understand and care for your Labrador Retriever’s potential ear infections at home!

Thanks again for subscribing! We’ll talk to you in the next installment of our Wellnergy Pets Breed Wellness Mini-Series!
